If you have ever wondered how Germany morphed into its various political shapes over the past few thousand years until the beginning of the twentieth century, grab this. Don't be put off by the price: Its free!! .The writing is light and humorous and not at all a Gibbonish tome.
The author, a lady, penned the book around the end of 19th century: If only she knew what was further in store for the poor Germans in the twentieth century.
The Germans are late on the democratic scene and you can see how so many vested interests, princes, emperors, invading kings, prelates, the papacy, Luther etc etc., made sure that democracy and freedom of the individual were made stillborn over the centuries.Whole populations were wiped-out through bloody internecine and religious wars and the resultant pestilence and famine.
Amazingly, this little gem will cost you the square root of nothing, Grab it now while stocks last. Although it will only take you from German Year Zero to end of the 19th Century it is terrific prep for further enlightenment from people like Shirer, Kershaw, Bullock, Fest, Hafner, Bilenberg, Trevor-Roper and the many historians who have given us an insight into the German scene in the twentieth century.I literally could not put this down once I had started.

A Short History of Germany Mary Platt Parmele 9781519655103 Books Reviews
the book was good the main problem was the size of type. I enjoyed the book but wished it had gone a little further
Good quick read for people making a short visit to Germany. I bought this for my foster daughter to read in preparation for her visit there. Thought it was just enough detail to be informative and exciting for her without burying her in too much detail.
German history is so hard to figure out. It is sort of all over the place!!! This book helped greatly to understand the general outline. I would very much recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the subject, and wants to get a good start. Well worth reading!
This is a nice, short, well informed introduction to a very interesting subject. German history is fascinating and this short book is the way to start. It is well written and although not a new book by any means, it is important and precise.
Very happy with the product.
Fun read. It offers a wealth of information in a conscise format, on this often overlooked subject.
This is not a text book type read and it does have explanation points randomly placed but overall I thought this was a good quick informative read. There are some interesting color photos in the back (kindle edition).
